The Texas Legislative Black Caucus condemns the recent decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the redistricting in Galveston County. The original redistricting plan dismantled a district where minorities made up a majority of the population, splitting Black and Hispanic communities into separate districts and effectively diluting their political influence. The trial court rightfully deemed this action egregious and ordered a redrawing of the map to ensure fair representation. However, the conservative appeals court has now reversed this decision, narrowing the scope of the Voting Rights Act and ruling against the Justice Department and voters of color. This decision undermines the ability of minority groups to join together in challenging discriminatory redistricting plans under the VRA, threatening the fundamental principles of fair representation and equality. The Texas Legislative Black Caucus stands firmly against this ruling and remains committed to fighting for the rights and representation of all minority communities in Texas.Rep.
