Cornell Wesley carried a piece of Birmingham, his hometown, with him when he ventured to Morehouse College at 18. After 4.5 years, his return in 2021 filled him with pride at the city’s progress. Now, as the Executive Director of the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, he is set to transition once more. Recently appointed Executive Director of Prosper Portland, an organization dedicated to urban economic development, Wesley will start his new role on August 4.A graduate of A.H. Parker High School, he has noted the economic disparities within neighborhoods. His initiatives in Birmingham include the Coca-Cola Corporate Headquarters expansion, which generated jobs, and the World Police and Fire Games, enriching the city's sports identity. "Birmingham embodies a strong community spirit," he stated, recognizing its influence on his journey. As he departs, Wesley promises to carry the stories and legacies of Birmingham wherever he goes.
