Steve Winlock, who dedicated half a century to education as a teacher and administrator, is retiring from his role as executive director of the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), School of Education.After 50 years, Winlock expressed, “It’s time for me to embark on the next chapter of my life.” Now at 71, he hopes to explore new avenues.SCOE's School of Education supports credential programs, aiding new educators and aspiring leaders. Superintendent Dave Gordon praised Winlock as a unique, admirable leader who significantly developed SCOE, training over 1,000 educators statewide.Winlock’s journey began in the Sacramento City Unified School District. He taught children of U.S. military personnel in Berlin and embraced performing arts, notably portraying Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar."An arts advocate, Winlock championed Proposition 28 for permanent arts education. Post-retirement, he plans to remain engaged in the community, believing deeply in the power of education and the arts. His last day at SCOE was August 28, with Shanine Coats succeeding him.
