Daniel Serafini, a prior Major League Baseball pitcher, was found guilty for the murder of his father-in-law and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law at their Lake Tahoe residence over four years ago. On Monday, a jury from Placer County decided Serafini was guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary linked to the June 2021 fatal shooting of the couple in Homewood. Authorities characterized the act as execution-style; Serafini fatally shot 70-year-old Robert Spohr and inflicted two gunshot wounds to his wife, Wendy Wood, who fortunately survived but has since passed away. Following an extensive two-year investigation, Serafini and his former nanny-turned-paramour, 33-year-old Samantha Scott, were apprehended in late 2023. Scott accepted a guilty plea as an accessory after the fact in February and admitted to driving Serafini to his in-laws’ home on the day of the incident. Serafini's wife, Erin Spohr, who is the couple's daughter, testified during the trial, maintaining her trust in him.
