(APRIL 30) 711 AD—Tarik the Moor leads 7,000 troops into Spain, overwhelming the Visigoths and securing Moorish rule. Historical accounts suggest he was Black, noted for “brown skin and wooly hair.” Tarik al Gibral’s legacy endures in the name of the Rock of Gibraltar. 1828—Shaka, renowned Zulu king, is assassinated. His military genius staved off European conquest, fostering Zulu expansion. Yet, growing tyranny incited his half-brothers to end his reign. MAY 1st 1866—The Memphis race riots erupt, killing 46 Blacks and two White allies. Sparked by former Confederates, this chaos catalyzes Congressional Reform, bolstering civil rights.
