DJ Unk, Atlanta Hip-Hop Pioneer, Dies at 43

DJ Unk, born Anthony Platt, was more than a rapper; he was a cultural icon who helped shape Atlanta’s snap music era. Signing with Big Oomp Records in 2000, he quickly rose to prominence. His debut album, Beat’n Down Yo Block (2006), peaked at No. 21 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart, propelled by the success of his breakout hit, “Walk It Out.” The track not only became a dancefloor anthem but also defined a moment in music history. With its signature beat and accompanying dance moves, “Walk It Out” showcased Atlanta’s vibrant hip-hop culture. The song’s impact reached new heights with a remix featuring André 3000 and Jim Jones. Struggles and Comeback In 2008, DJ Unk released his sophomore album, Second Season, but his career faced a setback the following year when he suffered a heart attack. Reflecting on the incident in a 2010 interview, he shared how the stresses of constant travel and work took a toll on his health.
