In response to claims of escalating violent crime, hundreds of National Guardsmen and federal agents have flooded the streets. Among the various footage circulating online, one segment captures officers engaging with a group of Black residents. A US Park Police officer approaches, inquiring about a man's identification while scrutinizing the cigarette he holds. The resident clarifies that he lives there and confirms it’s just a cigarette. The agent then remarks on the federal control of DC, detailing their focus on safety and addressing “quality of life issues” like public smoking. Despite broader claims, Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasized that crime rates are actually declining, recalling a significant 26 percent drop in violent incidents this year, asserting that D.C. is far from lawless.
