There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly ground coffee in the morning, but your caffeine fix isn’t just a costly habit – it could be benefiting your health. Early research has suggested that a cup of coffee raises the risk of heart disease and asthma, “but when you look at the evidence, it doesn’t say give up coffee, it actually says drink more,” says Prof Clare Collins, an expert in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Newcastle in New South Wales. Around a third of people in the UK already have a few mugs a day, while a quarter limit themselves to one and a tenth have two to three cups a week. “For people who are always asking ‘what else can I do to try and be healthy’ or ‘I’m going on a health kick’, the one thing you want to keep doing is to continue to drink coffee,” Prof Collins says.
