CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Elon Musk's venture, xAI, is confronted with grave accusations of jeopardizing Black communities in Tennessee and Mississippi for financial gain, as revealed in a petition presented during the NAACP’s 116th convention this week. A significant data center established by xAI in Memphis exemplifies ongoing environmental degradation affecting Black neighborhoods. The NAACP has firmly rejected the misleading narrative promoted by xAI, suggesting it is “helping” while addressing a lawsuit concerning air pollution in Memphis. The organization persistently advocates against environmental injustice and health inequalities impacting Black residents. For over a year, xAI has operated 35 commercial gas turbines in Memphis without the necessary permits, essential due to AI technology's substantial energy demands. While these turbines fulfill the energy needs of the Memphis facility, they also produce harmful emissions. Following the NAACP's legal notice, the company began the process of obtaining requisite permits. The community's fight for health and environmental equity in South Memphis continues unabated.
