Ex-Cop Involved In Deadly Breonna Taylor Raid Will Face Another Trial

Photo: Getty Images A former Louisville police officer who opened fire in the deadly raid of Breonna Taylor’s apartment will face a retrial, per HuffPost. On March 13. 2020, now-former officer Brett Hankison fired 10 shots into Taylor’s window and glass door as officers conducted a botched raid of her apartment. Some of the shots hit a neighboring apartment, but no one was injured. Hankison’s colleague, Myles Cosgrove, fired the shots that killed Taylor, though he was never convicted of her killing. Hankison was found not guilty in March 2022 of state charges of wanton endangerment. The Department of Justice brought federal charges against him, alleging that he violated Taylor’s constitutional rights and used excessive force. However, a 12-member, mostly white jury deadlocked in Hankison’s federal case, prompting U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings to declare a mistrial last month. It was up to federal prosecutors whether Hankison would face a retrial, which is now scheduled for October 14, 2024.
