Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has found himself embroiled in significant legal issues due to his participation in a dog-fighting ring. Indeed, a former sports icon linked to such a reprehensible act is shocking. Although we often celebrate our football legends, one must acknowledge that actions exhibiting cruelty are inexcusable.
On Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that an Oklahoma federal jury convicted Johnson, 54, on six counts for breaching the federal Animal Welfare Act by engaging in illegal activities involving animals intended for fights. His arrest in March revealed 190 "pit bull-type dogs" at his operation named "Mal Kant Kennels," marking the largest seizure from an individual in a federal dog-fighting case.
Post-verdict, Johnson relinquished custody of the dogs, now in the care of the United States Marshals Service. Attorney General Pamela Bondi expressed that Johnson's actions profited from animal suffering and emphasized the DOJ's dedication to combating animal abuse. Johnson faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a potential fine of $250,000 for each count.
