(This Week in Black History: April 23-29) APRIL 23,1856—Granville T. Woods, celebrated American inventor from Columbus, Ohio, is born. He amassed 65 patents for groundbreaking electrical and communication devices, including an innovative telephone transmitter acquired by Alexander Graham Bell's company. The Cincinnati Catholic Tribune hailed him as the "greatest colored inventor" of his time. 1872—Charlotte E. Ray makes history as the first Black female lawyer in the U.S. Despite excelling at Howard University and gaining admission to the D.C. bar, discrimination led her to teach instead. She passed away on January 4, 1911.
