Purpose’ Breaks Records at the Tonys Alongside Epic Hamilton Reunion

Entertainment history was significantly marked by the multiple Black winners of "Purpose," awarded Best Play at the 78th Tony Awards, held on Sunday at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. The accolades for "Purpose" were bestowed upon playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, actress Kara Young, and producers Debra Martin Chase, LaChanze, and Rashad V. Chambers. Garnering six nominations, the production focused on a politically active Black family, resulting in two Tony wins. Both Chase and LaChanze have solidified their influence as preeminent Black producers in contemporary Broadway.The ceremony, hosted by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and aired on CBS, also highlighted “Buena Vista Social Club,” which took home four awards, including Best Featured Actress for Trinidadian Natalie Venetia Belcon.Despite receiving five nominations, the revival of "Gypsy" didn’t secure any awards.
