President Trump often asserts that he champions working individuals and vowed during his campaign to defend “Black jobs.” However, his record reveals these assurances lack substance. Since assuming office in January, his policies have engendered employment instability and financial anxiety, as reflected in the recent July jobs report. Black unemployment has surged past 7 percent, nearly twice the national average, posing significant challenges, particularly for Black women in the workforce. These figures represent the turmoil faced by our communities, compounded by mass layoffs affecting Black workers within the federal sector. The recent legislative measures, including a drastic reduction in healthcare funding, further undermine job security. Unfortunately, the patterns of employment trends indicate that Black workers often suffer first during economic downturns. With nearly 1 million newly jobless individuals spanning various demographics in July, Trump has opted to dismiss inconvenient truths rather than address the underlying issues. Our collective effort in the labor movement remains essential to advocate for equitable conditions in the workforce, ensuring every worker has a voice.
