Six-year-old Swahili Francis, whose fight against acute kidney failure has touched hearts across Saint Lucia, is off to Martinique for further diagnosis and treatment. His mother, Cristy Francis, shared an update on his condition, expressing deep gratitude for the overwhelming public support that has helped make the trip possible.
Last month, St Lucia Times reported on the Francis family’s plea for assistance after Swahili was hospitalised in critical condition. His health crisis began on Christmas night with flu-like symptoms, including fever and coughing. His condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his admission to St Jude Hospital on December 30. Doctors diagnosed him with acute kidney failure caused by low electrolyte levels due to persistent vomiting, which placed excessive strain on his kidneys.
Now, weeks later, Cristy is relieved to report that Swahili has made tremendous progress. Speaking to St Lucia Times, she recalled how he went from being unable to walk, talk, or eat, to regaining his strength.
“Honestly, from the condition he started in, he couldn’t walk, he couldn’t talk, and he wasn’t eating. Now, he’s stronger. His progress has truly surprised me,” Cristy shared. “I just continue to pray that everything will be okay.”
