As Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica, the Government of Saint Lucia is taking decisive action to ensure the safety of Saint Lucian students in the area. Minister of Education Shawn Edward announced on October 27 that precautionary protocols have been implemented in collaboration with Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. “The government has arranged hotel accommodations for our students and allocated funds to assist them in purchasing necessary supplies in anticipation of the hurricane," Edward stated. On October 27, forecasters reported that Hurricane Melissa escalated to a Category 5 storm as it approached Jamaica, predicted to cause extensive flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. Meteorological experts confirmed this would be the most powerful hurricane to strike the island since official record-keeping commenced in 1851.Edward urged citizens to keep the students and the Jamaican populace in their thoughts, emphasizing that the government is closely monitoring the situation through established channels.
