Throughout his life, John Leeke has embraced his family heritage and the profound influence of his Catholic faith on his identity and sense of justice. Raised in Washington, D.C., and educated by nuns, his understanding of self was transformed alongside his daughter, Madeline “Ananda” Sherrill Leeke, as they delved into ancestry records on platforms like Ancestry.com. Their research unveiled a compelling narrative that began in Africa, traversed two tribes, crossed the ocean to Maryland, and concluded with a perilous journey to freedom in Canada. Surprisingly, they discovered their lineage included Black Protestants, emphasizing the vital role of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in this escape. Their findings are captured in their new publication, *American Change Agent*, shared during Black Catholic History Month. John reflects on the resilience of their ancestors, noting, “I come from good, strong stock,” while Ananda underlines the community's unity through faith.
