KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The National Urban League, Third Way, and Alliance for Entrepreneurial Equity reported in their 2024 “State of Black Business Report” that while Black-owned enterprises are expanding, they remain significantly underrepresented. Knoxville hosts over 200 Black-owned businesses, among them Billie Rae’s BBQ, launched by Patrice and Eugene Chandler in April 2024. Over the past 14 months, they have embraced the challenges of running a family business, discovering the demanding nature of the restaurant industry. Patrice emphasized the joy of serving their community, noting a rising spirit of rejuvenation among small businesses in East Knoxville.Deborah Porter, from the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission, reminisced about the bustling Black-owned businesses of her youth, highlighting an ongoing need for support. Kryshonna Fair of Urz Professional has worked to dismantle barriers facing Black entrepreneurs since her 2021 launch. Meanwhile, Kimberly Black of Trusted Field Services is inspiring women in construction through her innovative work. Despite obstacles, these entrepreneurs are committed to fostering a supportive environment for future generations, reinforcing the importance of Black-owned businesses within the community.
