A few years ago, I would have never imagined facing stage 4 cancer as a young Black woman in my 20s, yet here I am, steadfast in my battle. The journey began pre-pandemic when a harmless-looking lump on my knee hindered my movement. After numerous consultations, an orthopedic surgeon dismissed my concerns, attributing the issue to physical therapy. Persistent efforts eventually led to scans and a biopsy, diagnosing me with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in July 2020.Seeking a second opinion confirmed the diagnosis, leading to rigorous chemotherapy, radiation, and a tumor extraction in November 2020. Although I enjoyed six months of remission, the cancer returned and spread to my lungs. My oncologist introduced two promising clinical trials, but I faced the cold reality of underrepresentation in medical research. One trial involved complex procedures, showing early promise, but new tumors emerged despite initial success. The journey continues with chemotherapy, substantial out-of-pocket expenses, and a resilience bolstered by community support. By advocating for Black participation in clinical trials, I strive for equitable healthcare that can potentially save lives.
