Independence Police Release Edited Video of Maria Pike and Destinii Hope’s Killing, Sparking More Questions

Nearly three weeks after the killing of Maria Pike and her two-month-old baby, Destinii Hope, the Independence Police Department has released a highly edited three-minute video, offering a fragmented glimpse into the 20-minute incident. The video, which omits significant portions of the encounter, has only fueled public skepticism and intensified calls for accountability.
The footage shows officers entering the Oval Spring Apartments and briefly speaking with Maria, who is seen holding her baby in a closet. According to the police department’s accompanying text, officers asked Maria to put the baby down multiple times before she exited the closet and moved to a bed. The video later depicts Maria grabbing a knife—but abruptly ends before the double murder took place.
“It is unconscionable that, after the trauma the families of Baby Destinii and Maria have endured, the Independence Police Department would release a highly edited bodycam footage of this tragedy…” the Law Enforcement Accountability Project said in a public statement about the footage release. “We are again reminded of the complete lack of respect for victims of police violence, for those suffering from mental health issues, and for the cruel and inhumane treatment shown to certain members of our community.”
