From Steelers Fan to Arts Advocate: Inspiring Pittsburgh's Youth to Embrace Creativity

One enduring memory from my childhood revolves around the 1995 AFC Championship Game at Three Rivers Stadium. I, a ten-year-old, accompanied my father and his friends, Zandy and Mammal. Although I now stand at 5-foot-10, back then I struggled to see the field, often peering over the crowd and focusing on the vintage TVs overhead. The stadium collectively held its breath as Jim Harbaugh of the Colts attempted a pass toward the end zone, which was ultimately deemed incomplete after hitting the ground following a deflection by a Steeler defender. Our victory secured a Super Bowl berth for Pittsburgh, the first in 16 years.
Reflecting on that day emphasizes the significance of sports in Pittsburgh's community. Now, as another season commences, I recognize varying perspectives: living as an expatriate, sharing my life with a Bills fan, and pursuing my passion for teaching piano, wondering if there's enough appreciation for the arts amid our deep-rooted sports culture.
