Weeks following the emergence of “Lashunda Scales for Mayor” signs across Birmingham, Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales formally declared her candidacy for the city's leadership. With just three months before the August 26 election, she enters a competitive field that includes current Mayor Randall Woodfin, who previously bested Scales in 2021; State Rep. Juandalynn Givan; activist Kamau Afrika; and pastor Frank Woodson. Standing on the porch of a dilapidated home in Collegeville, Scales stated, “I see that 47% of my district is Birmingham, and it’s struggling….” Highlighting the city’s potential, she asserted that effective leadership is crucial to revitalizing Birmingham. “It's essential that our citizens recognize that help is forthcoming,” Scales added. The blight she addressed years ago remains a pressing concern, highlighting her urgent vision for transformation.
