As we approach Thanksgiving, many dread the prospect of navigating social media posts from acquaintances and relatives that challenge our perceptions of sanity. However, in-person interactions often remind us of the love and shared values we hold despite apparent differences. The current media environment leaves me yearning for past leaders who facilitated constructive public dialogue before social media and 24-hour news cycles created confusion. In an age where extreme political rhetoric prevails, I reflect fondly on Jack Kemp—a Republican who championed the fight against poverty and civil rights, even when his party lacked enthusiasm for these causes. My first task as the youngest NAACP president, appointed at 35, was meeting with Kemp. It was a surprising directive from chairman Julian Bond, yet it underscored the necessity of bipartisan cooperation. Kemp proved to be a dedicated ally and innovative problem solver, encouraging my outreach to Republican leaders during my tenure, which led to significant civil rights advancements.
