The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) reports that the K-9 added to its team in July 2024 has played a significant role in law enforcement, assisting in identifying contraband, including drugs, and illegal firearms.
The canine, gifted by the French Gendarmerie, has become a valuable asset in enhancing police operations, according to the RSLPF.
During a press conference on Tuesday, senior officers shared statistics that underscore the K-9 unit’s impact.
Drug-related offenses in Saint Lucia have increased by 15% in 2024, with a notable rise in cocaine seizures.
Police also reported the recovery of 72 illegal firearms and 1,318 rounds of ammunition between January and October 2024. The K-9 has been instrumental in several of these cases, aiding in the detection and recovery of illegal items.
“Thus far, the canine unit has participated in a number of operations, and of course during those operations, firearms and drugs would have been recovered. So, yes I would say it’s successful.” Deputy Police Commissioner, Dr. Mashama Sealy told reporters.
Given the success of the K-9, the RSLPF is considering additions to bolster future operations.
