Mosquitoes play a crucial role in the transmission of the West Nile virus to humans. The Allegheny County Health Department recently revealed that additional mosquito samples have tested positive for this virus. Consequently, mosquito treatment will occur in the neighborhoods of Hazelwood, South Side Slopes, Arlington, Mt. Oliver, Carrick, Knoxville, and Beltzhoover using the EPA-approved low-risk insecticide, Zenivex E20, which poses minimal risk to humans and pets.A truck-mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer is scheduled to operate on July 24 between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. to reduce mosquito populations. Should rain disrupt these plans, spraying will instead take place on Monday, July 28th, during the same hours.West Nile virus remains the predominant mosquito-borne illness in the United States, typically peaking in cases during mosquito season from spring to fall. Most infected individuals remain asymptomatic, while only 20% manifest mild symptoms. As emphasized by Vector Control Specialist Nicholas Baldauf, wearing protective clothing and utilizing insect repellent are key strategies for avoiding bites. Community vigilance is essential for managing mosquito breeding sites. Residents can report such areas to the Allegheny County Health Department’s Housing and Community Environment Program.
