A new law in Alabama aims to reduce the cost of menstrual and maternity products for consumers. According to the 2023 U.S. Census, around 16 percent of families in Alabama live under the poverty line, making these essential items crucial. Effective immediately, state sales tax will no longer apply to select items in this category.“This legislation represents a progressive move to demonstrate to young individuals that the government is working to eliminate barriers for those seeking to build families,” stated Shante Wolfe, the URGE Southeastern States Field Director. URGE champions reproductive rights and equitable access to essential hygiene products. Wolfe emphasized the need for financial relief, particularly in lower-income areas, highlighting that the tax exemption—approximately 4%—allows families to allocate funds towards food, medications, or transportation. The exemption covers items such as pads, tampons, maternity wear, diapers, and baby bottles. While the law may reduce state revenue by an estimated $10 million, lawmakers believe the positive impact on families justifies this decision. The bill has garnered bipartisan support, although local tax exemptions remain at the discretion of municipal authorities.
