A judge in Philadelphia has issued a surprisingly lenient sentence for a former police officer, Mark Dial, who was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the fatal shooting of Eddie Irizarry in 2023. Dial received a sentence ranging from 9.5 months to two years, significantly lower than the state’s recommended 3.5 to seven years, with the prosecution seeking a term of five to ten years.Having already spent nearly ten months in jail, Dial was granted immediate parole, leading to claims from both the prosecutor and Irizarry’s family that justice was not adequately served. District Attorney Larry Krasner expressed his dismay, characterizing the sentencing as detrimental to public confidence in the justice system, which he believes exhibits systemic inequalities.Dial, who fatally shot the unarmed Irizarry during a traffic stop, was convicted in May.
