Kirkman II) In 1910, sickle cell disease was first described in the United States, marking the beginning of a long and often overlooked battle for those living with the condition. Fast-forward to 2023, and the sickle cell community is still fighting—each day is a testament to their resilience.  The Sickle Cell Matters Awareness Walk returns to the Charles H. Wright Museum on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 9 a.m., with this year’s theme, “Walking into a Brighter Future.” The event highlights the tremendous strides made in the sickle cell community, including the FDA’s approval of three new disease-modifying medications and two gene therapy options, with more breakthroughs on the horizon. For over 50 years, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Michigan Chapter has championed families and individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), raising awareness and educating Detroit and its surrounding communities. Despite significant advances in medical care, only four disease-modifying medications are currently available, and even these are underprescribed and underutilized.
