Belle Vue and Babonneau serve as primary hosts for Kwéyòl Heritage Month; however, the Folk Research Centre (FRC) has highlighted that diverse activities occur across the island throughout October. One noteworthy event was Festen Jwé, a festival highlighting traditional games orchestrated by the Monchy Kwéyòl Committee. Celebrating its second year, this joyous occasion took place on October 12. Based on its success, organizers are optimistic that continued support will allow it to remain integral to Kwéyòl Heritage Month, potentially expanding into year-round events.Held at the Monchy Playing Field, Festen Jwé featured traditional games such as wawi, tiki tok, marbles, and rope skipping, drawing in participants of all ages. The committee’s public relations officer, Christa St. Ange, expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting the event fostered community bonds among diverse neighborhoods within Monchy. Co-chair Lillian Alexander led a wawi workshop, emphasizing the importance of preserving these games for future generations. Upcoming FRC activities, including La Wen Kwéyòl on October 18, promise to keep celebrating this cultural heritage alive.
