New Concern Over Alcohol Misuse

As Saint Lucia joined in the global observance of October 2 as World No Alcohol Day, there were new concerns over the misuse of intoxicating beverages, especially among the youth. Wang Sonson, Deputy Coordinator of the Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat (SAACS), emphasised the day’s importance during an address to mark the observance. Sonson highlighted the profound impact of alcohol misuse not just on individual health but on families and society as a whole. He underscored that alcohol consumption has woven itself into the cultural fabric of Saint Lucia, particularly in social gatherings where youth start drinking at an early age. According to Sonson, early alcohol exposure can lead to a life-long struggle with alcohol misuse, resulting in a myriad of serious health issues. “The misuse of alcohol is associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental health disorders, and injuries,” Sonson remarked, pointing out the escalating healthcare costs and the burden that such health issues place on families and the nation.
