(Photos: YouTube Screenshots) - As reported by The City Newspaper, the NYPD is repositioning its 3,600 school safety agents from the Community Affairs Bureau directly under the jurisdiction of Chief of Department John Chell. This shift has drawn criticism, particularly concerning the NYPD's existing challenges within Black and Latino communities.Jake Martinez, deputy director of the Education Policy Center at the New York Civil Liberties Union, issued a statement asserting:“Mayor Adams’s choice to reassign supervision of Student Safety Agents—the nation’s most extensive school police force—under NYPD leadership is a perilous decision that jeopardizes students' safety and diminishes the security of schools.“The NYPD should not be involved in our classrooms. Each year, countless students in New York City face suspensions, arrests, or even incarceration under the actions of the NYPD, exacerbating future threats and advancing the school-to-prison pipeline, which disproportionately impacts students of color.“Schools ought to be nurturing environments for development and learning, not perilous spaces where a single misstep may lead to police involvement.”
