A week after owner Robert Kraft fired Jerod Mayo during the season’s final game against the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots announced the hiring on social media on Sunday.

The team was inducted into the club’s Ring of Honor in 2023, and Vrabel, a former linebacker who won three Super Bowl championships with the Pats, was the front-runner to take over.
According to NFL Research and NFL.com, “Vrabel is the first coach since 1950 to replace another coach and both had played together in the NFL as teammates, since Forrest Gregg replaced Bart Starr as head coach of the Packers in 1984.”
