62-year-old Monica Calixte lost her life after she was struck by a pickup along the Vide Bouteille highway at about 8 pm on Saturday, August 3. Reports indicated that Calixte was attempting to cross the highway median, although there are walkovers for pedestrian safety. However, one close family member recalled that the deceased feared heights. According to the relative, since Calixte moved to Bisee, Castries, she consistently avoided using the walkover. “She going on the beach just across – behind the Sir Ira school, she would never take the walkover. She would just see the road empty, and just jump there, you understand?” The relative said that although he knows Calixte’s actions were wrong, he believes drivers should be a bit more compassionate towards pedestrians. “To the drivers, I might say, even though someone does not take the walkover, at least give them a chance. At least take it easy, but you never know. You don’t have to be knocking somebody,”  he stated. The relative is now asking all pedestrians to learn from Monica Calixte’s death and use walkovers. & The article Pedestrian’s Death Prompts Warning To Use Walkovers is from St. Lucia Times.
