The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has reported recovering several illegal high-powered weapons in its continuing efforts to crack down on gun crime.
The disclosure came from Acting Police Commissioner Verne Garde, who did not go into much detail.
“Quite frankly, we have done a lot in regard to achieving firearms off the streets. You may not know that, but we have, within the last week recovered almost four to five high-powered weapons. We have done so through the help of some of our sister organisations,” Garde stated.
He revealed that the police engaged in targetted missions culminating in the recovery of the weapons and arrests of several individuals.
Garde also revealed that people have voluntarily brought in “one or two firearms.”
Regarding a firearm amnesty, the Acting Police Commissioner declared that the police have no intention of depending on such an initiative to recover all illegal firearms.
“We intend to do so through a problem-solving approach and also an intelligence-gathering approach,” he noted in an interview Monday.
On September 2, Garde took up a six-month contract as Acting Police Commissioner, vowing at his first news conference that he would not allow criminals to overrun Saint Lucia.
