Police Report Decline in Tourist Muggings in Castries

The number of reported tourist muggings in Castries has significantly decreased since the start of the cruise season, thanks to increased police presence and strategic efforts, according to Inspector Yone Camchon from the Castries City Police Constabulary. Though not providing specific statistics, he indicated that the police’s efforts had reaped rewards. Inspector Yone Camchon, “We strategise all our efforts and ensure that all the hotspots have been covered, and there is a lot of police presence all over the area… the mugging has been reduced due to the presence of the police. Persons have been arrested and charged. So we see a reduction in persons attacking the tourists,” Inspector Camchon said during a press briefing on Wednesday. In addition to addressing muggings, officers have been actively patrolling the streets and issuing traffic tickets during the day. As part of their crime prevention efforts, the Castries police department introduced a mobile police station in December 2024. Inspector Camchon described this as an “additional help” that enhances police visibility, improves response times and maintains order.
