A Democratic congresswoman has initiated legal action regarding the decision to affiliate President Donald Trump’s name with the Kennedy Center. According to CNN, Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), who serves as an ex officio trustee at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, filed the lawsuit on Monday, asserting that only Congress possesses the authority to alter names or designate memorials within this federally governed institution. “This represents a blatant disregard for the law and undermines our constitutional framework,” Beatty stated in her court filings. This legal challenge follows a recent vote by the Kennedy Center’s board that agreed to include Trump’s name on the building. Beatty expressed her frustration, claiming she was silenced during the board meeting while attempting to voice her objections. She described the actions as more typical of authoritarian regimes rather than an American democracy. The arts center was named to honor President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963.
