The Shadow Lounge, situated at the intersection of S. Highland Avenue and Baum Boulevard, was established by Justin Strong, a University of Pittsburgh student, who unveiled the venue on June 24, 2000. In a 2024 interview with the New Pittsburgh Courier, Strong expressed, “I’ve always been ‘different’ and sought an alternative to mainstream offerings. I struggled to find what I desired, even at Pitt, which led to its creation for my own enjoyment—if you appreciate it, join us.” The milestone of its 25th anniversary on June 28, 2025, attracted hundreds for a celebratory block party on Baum Boulevard adjacent to the former venue. The event featured talented hip-hop artists performing through Rhyme Calisthenics, alongside numerous food vendors and visual art displays, paying tribute to the Lounge’s cultural impact. Strong, now managing Strong’s Cleaners in Homewood, noted the overwhelming attendance included newcomers unacquainted with the original Lounge. He announced the Reunion will become an annual celebration every last Saturday in June.
