On Thursday, Miles Law School revealed that retired Jefferson County Judge Carole Smitherman will assume the role of dean. Having stepped down from her position in January after a 13-year tenure as a circuit court judge, Smitherman expressed her honor and commitment to this significant responsibility. “As an alumnus, I appreciate the unique aspects of our academic journey, and I recognize the contributions our graduates make to the legal profession,” she remarked. Established in 1974, Miles Law School boasts prominent alumni, including Jefferson County DA Danny Carr and State Sen. Rodger Smitherman.Carole Smitherman emphaized the need for growth to continue the school’s legacy, acknowledging President Bobbie Knight’s support in boosting enrollments and enhancing faculty engagement. Knight praised Smitherman’s appointment as a testament to the school’s dedication to community impact. With a remarkable career, Smitherman was the first Black woman deputy district attorney and circuit court judge in Jefferson County. Her extensive service and leadership experience uniquely position her to guide the next generation of legal professionals.
