I went to see “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” on Tuesday night, and it provided the warmth and excitement I needed to get through the blistery and violently cold weather we’ve been having here in Indianapolis. The first North American Tour of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is currently onstage at the Murat Theatre at Old National Center Jan. 14-19. Based on the 2001 film, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” debuted on Broadway in 2019 won 10 Tony Awards in 2021. The musical follows Christian (Christian Douglas), an American songwriter who travels to Paris to find himself. Instead, he finds Toulouse-Lautrec (Nick Rashad Burroughs) and Santiago (Danny Burgos), who lead him to the illustrious Moulin Rouge club where he meets and falls for Satine (Arianna Rosario), a tragically beautiful cabaret singer. A secret whirlwind romance ensues, as it so often does, as they race to save the club with the production of a new show. I love theater as much as the next gal, but this was the first time I’ve ever seen any iteration of “Moulin Rouge!” I’ve never seen the movie, listened to the soundtrack or seen the musical before last night.
