Woodlawn United, an organization dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods, is set to commence its mixed-income housing project. On 50th Street North in West Woodlawn, developers plan to construct four market-rate homes, each listed at $259,000, with completion anticipated by September. Another significant venture is on Georgia Road in South Woodlawn, focused on affordable housing. Local leaders emphasized the importance of providing housing options that keep residents from being displaced. “Affordable pricing is crucial for newcomers,” expressed Jason Avery, president of the neighborhood association. He asserted the necessity of collaborative efforts to ensure Woodlawn evolves not through gentrification but through revitalization. The increase in homeownership has risen by 10 percent since Woodlawn United's establishment, noted CEO Mashonda Taylor. Additionally, Councilor J.T. Moore highlighted that enhancing housing availability can help combat community blight. With the upcoming Cottages on Georgia Road geared towards low-income families, the initiative aims to ensure quality housing is accessible to all.
