Despite advancements in medical technology enabling longer lives for those with cardiovascular ailments, the risk factors contributing to these diseases persistently rise.Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., influenced by surging rates of hypertension, obesity, and other critical risk factors, as indicated in the American Heart Association’s 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update. Cardiovascular illnesses, such as heart disease and stroke, claim more lives than all cancers and accidental deaths combined. The report reveals approximately 47% of U.S. adults face high blood pressure, over 72% are categorized as overweight, nearly 42% live with obesity, and more than half suffer from Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.According to Dhruv S. Kazi, M.D., projections predict that by 2050, hypertension and obesity will impact over 180 million U.S. adults, while diabetes prevalence will exceed 80 million. Health care costs related to cardiovascular diseases may surge by 300% over the same period. Demographic disparities exist, with Black women exhibiting the highest rates of high blood pressure and obesity. Moreover, concerning trends show that young populations globally are increasingly affected by obesity.
