Sac State: ‘Incredibly Diverse’ Candidate Pool For Head Coaching Post

By OBSERVER NewsroomThe odds are looking favorable that Sacramento State officials may hire the university’s first Black head football coach.Sac State president Dr. Luke Wood confirmed that he and Athletic Director Mark Orr have met with many attractive candidates stressing that the vacant head coaching position has garnered a lot of interest from the football world.“We heard from more than 100 coaches within 24 hours,” Wood told The OBSERVER via phone Monday night adding that current and former coaches from professional and collegiate programs reached out to the university.Wood could not name the candidates, nor could he address their ethnicity. However, he said he is very excited about the finalists. “The pool (of candidates) is incredibly diverse,” he said.& Among those interviewed was former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick. Vick, who has no previous coaching experience, reportedly agreed to accept the head coaching position at Norfolk State University. Another candidate rumored to be on the short list of prospects include UNLV Offensive Coordinator Brennan Marion.Orr said the position is attractive to many in the coaching ranks as the Hornet football program has been relatively successful over the last five seasons.
