The government has disclosed that Saint Lucia has saved $4.5 million annually since replacing sodium street lights with LED bulbs. Before December 2023, the street lighting bill ranged from $6 million to $8 million yearly. A government release said the Philip J. Pierre administration would redirect street light savings to improve citizen security and road safety and procure and install over 200 CCTV cameras on utility poles around the island. The release disclosed that from August to December 2023, the country installed over 14,000 LED bulbs. The release said nearly 17,000 LED bulbs will be in place by the end of March 2024. The government will remove and replace 20,000 high-pressure sodium bulbs from street lamps throughout the island. Saint Lucia is boldly playing its part in tackling the global climate crisis by pursuing greener and cleaner energy solutions. Chief Electrical Engineer Shane Jean explained that Saint Lucia street lighting consumes about ten percent of electricity production. However, Jean observed that the figure was ‘quite a bit’ for a sparsely populated island. The Chief Engineer stated that LED lights consume less electricity, resulting in savings.
