Same Sex Couples Are Far More Likely to Be Interracial Than Opposite-Sex Couples

A new report from the U.S. Census Bureau finds that in 2022, there were about 1.3 million same-sex couple households in the United States. Roughly 740,000 were married and 540,000 unmarried. About 31 percent of married same-sex couples were interracial in 2022, much higher than the 19 percent of married opposite-sex couples that were interracial. Interracial couple households were also more common among same-sex (34 percent) than opposite-sex (29 percent) unmarried couples. Among married same-sex couples, a larger share of male (37 percent) than female (25 percent) couples were interracial. Similarly, a larger share of unmarried male same-sex (39 percent) than female same-sex (29 percent) couples were interracial.
