Juneteenth commemorates the conclusion of slavery within the United States. This tradition originated in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas received delayed news of their freedom. Over the years, celebrations have proliferated nationwide, and after the 2020 protests following George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, this day was designated a federal holiday.
Marcus Harrison Green, founder of the South Seattle Emerald and co-host of the podcast In the Meanwhile, recently spoke with KUOW’s Kim Malcolm about Seattle's celebrations.
Malcolm inquired about a Juneteenth guide published in the Emerald. Green expressed surprise at the abundance of at least ten events, recalling times when participation was sparse. He highlighted the upcoming Juneteenth Skate to Freedom Party in Judkins Park, noting its impressive growth, from dozens to nearly a thousand attendees last year.
He also mentioned the Summer of Soul celebration at Jimi Hendrix Park, emphasizing its vibrant community atmosphere. As an expert, Green reflected on the profound significance of Juneteenth and its role in promoting collective progress towards equity in society.
