The first day of school holds paramount significance for students, prompting Keira Cox to ensure her children attended Birmingham City Schools as the fall semester commenced on August 7. “It’s establishing the tone for the school year,” remarked Cox.To her astonishment, her son’s presence on the inaugural day resulted in a delightful surprise—a congratulatory email from the City of Birmingham. “I opened it, screamed in excitement, and immediately RSVPed,” she shared. Receiving recognition for fulfilling parental duties was a rewarding experience.Cox was among the parents awarded $500 through the City of Birmingham’s Ready Day One Incentive initiative. On Tuesday, the city and The Penny Foundation celebrated families whose children were enrolled and present at school on the first day during a ceremony at John Phillips Academy. Two families from each of the 43 district schools were randomly selected for the awards, funded by a $43,000 grant from the foundation.
