The Cincinnati Catholic Tribune hailed him as an unparalleled inventor.1872—Charlotte E. Ray makes history as America’s first Black female lawyer. A gifted scholar, Ray earned her law degree by age 22 but faced discrimination that forced her to pivot to teaching. She passed away on January 4, 1911.
