Lupita Nyong’o, renowned for her diverse film roles, recently opened up about a health issue she faced while filming “12 Years a Slave.” Via Instagram, she disclosed that her diagnosis of fibroids coincided with her winning an Academy Award in 2014. Recognizing the silence surrounding this condition, particularly among Black women, she expressed a desire to speak out during Fibroid Awareness Month. On July 16, Nyong’o emphasized the need for conversations about fibroids, highlighting how many are suffering without seeking help due to societal expectations of painful periods. Common symptoms include heavy bleeding and pelvic pain, yet many remain undiagnosed. To further aid awareness, she has collaborated with Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke to introduce bills focused on uterine health, including the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act.Nyong’o also partnered with the Foundation for Women's Health to create the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant, aiming to develop less invasive treatment options for women suffering from fibroids. This initiative is particularly crucial for Black women, who experience fibroids at a higher prevalence and severity.
