Beyond the Court: Simeon Coach Tim Flowers Shares How Derrick Rose's Funded Hong Kong Trip Became a Transformative Experience

NBA icon Derrick Rose actively engages in philanthropic initiatives in his hometown of Chicago. As the youngest NBA MVP and a former Simeon basketball star, Rose prioritizes giving back to the community that played a pivotal role in his journey to the top, being the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Recently, he and his training center, GOAT Lab, sponsored a trip to Hong Kong for the Simeon High School basketball team. Although the trip aimed to expand the players’ perspectives beyond Chicago, the Illinois High School Athletic Association (IHSA) cited violations of two bylaws. Consequently, head coach Tim Flowers received a six-game suspension, with two assistant coaches grounded for four games. This season, Simeon is limited to 28 games instead of the usual 31. Remarkably, this marks the second punishment for the Simeon program for international trips, as they faced penalties for a prior excursion to Africa in 2022.
