Alcorn State University, a historically Black university in Mississippi, has canceled its women’s soccer season, according to a recent report from HBCU Gameday.
A letter signed by 15 current and former players called out inadequate athletic facilities that contained bats and snakes in the locker room showers and an absence of hot water. They also reported inadequate team equipment and an understaffed training room with unqualified students performing medial treatments.
Additionally, Ken Kabiru, interim head coach of the women’s soccer team, left his position shortly after he was hired on July 22.
“The Southwestern Athletic Conference has been formally notified that Alcorn State University will cancel the 2024 Women’s Soccer season,” stated the SWAC. “Alcorn State University has been sanctioned in accordance with the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations. We look forward to the return of Alcorn State Lady Braves Soccer as one of ten participating member institutions in the sport of Women’s Soccer within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.”
